Never give up.
Wow. Have you ever had your website shut down, and you have no idea how to fix it? Well, that is what happened to me the past couple of days. I updated the Wordpress Make theme and, apparently, the update had a bug. After 2 days, Wordpress finally fixed the theme's bug (after two attempts), but the only way to fix my website was to edit line 653 in the extras.php file in the theme's folder via FTP. Don't worry. If you have no idea what I am talking about, I totally understand. When I first read how to solve the issue in a support forum, I was like a deer in headlights. After reading about five articles and ten forum posts on the topic and reaching out to my past web developer, Webfaction customer support, Wordpress customer support, and my techy brother...I finally started to understand (sort of) what I needed to do and how to do it. I replaced the extras.php file altogether (versus editing line 653), and now my site is back up and running. Whew!
The quote above - particularly the "Never give up" part - sums up what I went through. Since Wordpress and Webfaction couldn't correct the issue for me, I had to do it on my own...with a little help from my friends. (Insert The Beatles song here.) I feel proud of myself for figuring it out and fixing the problem. I am still no FTP superstar, but I have a little more understanding of how to update my website if the Wordpress dashboard is unavailable. But, let's just hope that never happens again...
Do you manage your own website, or do you work with a developer? Have you ever had to edit files in FTP? How'd it go?
Thanks for your patience while my site was down.
